The Trayvon Martin Journal by Brian Holiday-El aka TiB!
Lately, as I'm sure many of you will relate, I've had my share of sleepless nights since I heard the news of the murder of Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman, but nothing I could ever feel can compare to the pain and sore anguish Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin, and the host of family and friends of the slain Trayvon Martin are experiencing at this very moment. My sincerest prayers go out to all of them as they endure this prolonged period of mourning for their son, 'our son', do to the nature of his death and the fact that justice has not been served; this is insult added to injury and in his case tragedy.
Truth be told, I really don't care who's a racist and who isn't. Knowing one from the other doesn't put food on the table. What I do care about is Love, Truth, Peace, Freedom, and JUSTICE!!!! I care that, in a country that I live in, the leader of the so-called free world, innocent lives are protected, that each individual is given a fair shake, that there's accountability for the representatives who spend our tax dollars, that are in office to defend the constitutional principles that they are sworn to uphold and protect, BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC! I care that in 2012, a certain race and class of people are still treated as less than human! I care that someone that looks just like I did when I was 17 or just like my little brother, or my little cousins, or my former students...that someone that young with his entire life ahead of him, can be snatched away from the world in the blink of an eye; a world he hadn't even begun to experience without any consequences or so-called due process!
We don't know what Trayvon would have grown up to be or what contribution he may have lived to give to the world he was prematurely taken from! But now we never will know, will we? Of course not, because he was taken out by a nondescript RACIST! And ohhhhh!!!!! How can this man not be arrested? How can he just walk free? How can he claim self defense? How can he say with a straight face that he is the one being hated on? How?
I'll tell you how! Because America has still not reconciled with her cardinal sin! America has many flaws, but one of the most glaring stains on her democratic jacket has been with her since her inception and has not only remained with her throughout her crippled maturity, that stain has seeped deep beneath the social skin and has festered into a political cancer! It has insidiously mutated and morphed to the point that, for those who are ignorant of history, or have lost their humanity, it is now unrecognizable. The Invisible Man spoke of it! The double-standard worn like a badge by the talented tenth knew it well! Trayvon and his generation are the heirs of it's supposed extinction and Trayvon Martin is now an enshrined reminder of how to remember how not to forget America's Original Sin: BIGOTRY!
Character, will always be my determiner of how I choose to interact with a person. You could be orange and look like you come from another planet, but if you're mean spirited I'll sense it, and if you're kindhearted I'll feel it and I'll respond accordingly. If a man is homeless and asks for money, or is lost and asks for direction, his complexion doesn't determine whether I'll give coins or guidance: However, whether or not I have and can part with what's being asked of me, the degree of sincerity in his tone, and the evidence of what he needs are the main factors that move me to either help him or pass him!
